My friends, comrades, and fellow South Africans: I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy, and freedom for all. I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have made it possible for me to be here today. I therefore have placed the remaining years of my life in your , I extend my sincere and warmest gratitude to the millions of my compatriots and those in every corner of the globe who have campaigned tirelessly for my release. I extend special greetings to the people of Cape Town the city through which — which has been my home for three decades.
I salute the rank members of the ANC: You have sacrificed life and limb in the pursuit of the noble cause of our , like Solomon Mahlangu and Ashley Kriel, who have paid the ultimate price for the freedom of all South Africans. I salute the South African Communist Party for its sterling contribution to the struggle for democracy. You have survived 40 years of unrelenting persecution.
The memory of great communists like Moses Kotane, Yusuf Dadoo, Bram Fischer, and Moses Mabhida will be cherished for generations to come. I salute General Secretary Joe Slovo, one of our finest patriots. We are heartened by the fact that the alliance between ourselves and the Party remains as strong as it — it always , the National Education Crisis Committee, the South African Youth Congress, the Transvaal and Natal Indian Congresses, and COSATU and the many other formations of the Mass Democratic Movement. I also salute the Black Sash and the National Union of South African Students.
We note with pride that you have looked — that you have acted as the conscience of white South Africa. Even during the darkest days in the history of our struggle you held the flag of liberty high. The large cale mass mobilization of the past few years is one of the key factors which led to the opening of the final chapter of our — Your organized strength is the pride of our movement. You remain the most dependable force in the struggle to end exploitation and oppression.
I greet the traditional leaders of our country — many among you continue to walk in the footsteps of great heroes like Hintsa and , you, the young lions. You, the young lions, have energized our entire struggle. I pay tribute to the mothers and wives and sisters of our nation. Without your support our struggle would not have reached this advanced stage. The sacrifice of the frontline states will be remembered by South Africans , black and white, recognize that apartheid has no future. It has to be ended by our own decisive mass action in order to build peace and security.
The mass campaigns of defiance and other actions of our organizations and people can onlyculminate in the establishment of continent is in calculable. The fabric of family life of millions of my people has been shattered. Millions are homeless and unemployed. Our economy — Our economy lies in ruins and our people are embroiled in political strife. Our resort to the armed struggle in 1960 with the formation of the military wing of the ANC, Umkhonto we Sizwe, was a purely defensive action against the violence of apartheid. The factors which necessitated the armed struggle still exist today. We have no option but to continue. We express the hope that a climate conducive to a negotiated settlement will be created soon so that there may no longer be the need for the armed , strategies, and , I feel duty瞓ound to make the point that a leader of the movement is a person who has been democratically elected at a national conference.
This is a principle which must be upheld without any , I wish to report to you that my talks with the government have been aimed at normalizing the political situation in the country. We have not as yet begun discussing the basic demands of the struggle. I wish to stress that I myself have at no time entered into negotiations about the future of our country except to insist on a meeting between the ANC and the has gone further than any other Nationalist President in taking real steps to normalize the situation. However, there are further steps, as outlined in the Harare Declaration, that have to be met before negotiations on the basic demands of our people can begin.
Negotiations cannot take place — Negotiations cannot take place above the heads or behind the backs of our people. It is our belief that the future of our country can only be determined by a body which is democratically elected on a non瞨acial basis. Negotiations on the dismantling of apartheid will have to address the overwhelming demands of our people for a democratic, non瞨acial and unitary South Africa. And this reality is that we are still suffering under the policies of the Nationalist , so that the process towards democracy is rapid and uninterrupted. We have waited too long for our freedom. We can no longer wait.
Now is the time to intensify the struggle on all fronts. To relax our efforts now would be a mistake which generations to come will not be able to role in a united democratic and non瞨acial South Africa is the only way to peace and racial harmony. In conclusion, I wish to quote my own words during my trial in 1964. They are as true today as they were then. I spoke: I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and — and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.

this is the 37th time i have spoken to you from this office, where so many decisions have been made that shape the history of this nation. each time i have done so to discuss with you some matter that i believe affected the national interest. in all the decisions i have made in my public life i have always tried to do what was best for the nation.
throughout the long and difficult period of watergate, i have felt it was my duty to persevere -- to make every possible effort to complete the term of office to which you elected me. in the past few days, however, it has become evident to me that i no longer have a strong enough political base in the congress to justify continuing that effort. as long as there was such a base, i felt strongly that it was necessary to see the constitutional process through to its conclusion; that to do otherwise would be unfaithful to the spirit of that deliberately difficult process, and a dangerously destabilizing precedent for the future. but with the disappearance of that base, i now believe that the constitutional purpose has been served. and there is no longer a need for the process to be prolonged.
i would have preferred to carry through to the finish whatever the personal agony it would have involved, and my family unanimously urged me to do so. but the interests of the nation must always come before any personal considerations. from the discussions i have had with congressional and other leaders i have concluded that because of the watergate matter i might not have the support of the congress that i would consider necessary to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the nation will require.
i have never been a quitter.
to leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. but as president, i must put the interests of

in passing this office to the vice president, i also do so with the profound sense of the weight of responsibility that will fall on his shoulders tomorrow, and therefore of the understanding, the patience, the cooperation he will need from all americans. as he assumes that responsibility he will deserve the help and the support of all of us. as we look to the future, the first essential is to begin healing the wounds of this nation. to put the bitterness and divisions of the recent past behind us and to rediscover those shared ideals that lie at the heart of our strength and unity as a great and as a free people.
by taking this action, i hope that i will have hastened the start of that process of healing which is so desperately needed in america. i regret deeply any injuries that may have been done in the course of the events that led to this decision. i would say only that if some of my judgments were wrong -- and some were wrong -- they were made in what i believed at the time to be the best interests of the nation.
to those who have stood with me during these past difficult months, to my family, my friends, the many others who joined in supporting my cause because they believed it was right, i will be eternally grateful for your support. and to those who have not felt able to give me your support, let me say i leave with no bitterness toward those who have opposed me, because all of us in the final analysis have been concerned with the good of the country, however our judgments might differ.
so let us all now join together in affirming that common commitment and in helping our new president succeed for the benefit of all americans. i shall leave this office with regret at not completing my term but with gratitude for the privilege of serving as your president for the past five and a half years. these years have been a momentous time in the history of our nation and the world. they have been a time of achievement in which we can all be proud, achievements that represent the shared efforts of the administration, the congress and the people. but the challenges ahead are equally great. and they, too, will require the support and the efforts of the congress and the people, working in cooperation with the new administration.
we have ended america's longest war. but in the work of securing a lasting peace in the world, the goals ahead are even more far-reaching and more difficult. we must complete a structure of peace, so that it will be said of this generation -- our generation of americans -- by the people of all nations, not only that we ended one war but that we prevented future wars.
we have unlocked the doors that for a quarter of a century stood between the united states and the people's republic of china. we must now insure that the one-quarter of the world's people who live in the people's republic of china will be and remain, not our enemies, but our friends.
in the middle east, 100 million people in the arab countries, many of whom have considered us their enemy for nearly 20 years, now look on us as their friends. we must continue to build on that friendship so that peace can settle at last over the middle east and so that the cradle of civilization will not become its grave. together with the soviet union we have made the crucial breakthroughs that have begun the process of limiting nuclear arms. but, we must set as our goal, not just limiting, but reducing and finally destroying these terrible weapons, so that they cannot destroy civilization. and so that the threat of nuclear war will no longer hang over the world and the people. we have opened a new relation with the soviet union. we must continue to develop and expand that new relationship, so that the two strongest nations of the world will live together in cooperation rather than confrontation.
around the world -- in asia, in africa, in latin america, in the middle east -- there are millions of people who live in terrible poverty, even starvation. we must keep as our goal turning away from production for war and expanding production for peace so that people everywhere on this earth can at last look forward, in their children's time, if not in our own time, to having the necessities for a decent life. here, in america, we are fortunate that most of our people have not only the blessings of liberty but also the means to live full and good, and by the world's standards even abundant lives.
we must press on, however, toward a goal not only of more and better jobs but of full opportunity for every american, and of what we are striving so hard right now to achieve -- prosperity without inflation.
for more than a quarter of a century in public life, i have shared in the turbulent history of this evening. i have fought for what i believe in. i have tried, to the best of my ability, to discharge those duties and meet those responsibilities that were entrusted to me. sometimes i have succeeded. and sometimes i have failed. but always i have taken heart from what theodore roosevelt once said about the man in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes short again and again because there is not effort without error and shortcoming, but who does actually strive to do the deed, who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumphs of high achievements and with the worst if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.
i pledge to you tonight that as long as i have a breath of life in my body, i shall continue in that spirit. i shall continue to work for the great causes to which i have been dedicated throughout my years as a congressman, a senator, vice president and president, the cause of peace -- not just for america but among all nations -- prosperity, justice and opportunity for all of our people.
there is one cause above all to which i have been devoted and to which i shall always be devoted for as long as i live.
when i first took the oath of office as president five and a half years ago, i made this sacred commitment: to consecrate my office, my energies, and all the wisdom i can summon to the cause of peace among nations. i've done my very best in all the days since to be true to that pledge. as a result of these efforts, i am confident that the world is a safer place today, not only for the people of america but for the people of all nations, and that all of our children have a better chance than before of living in peace rather than dying in war.

It is a commonplace among moralists that you cannot get happiness bypursuing it。 This is only true if you pursue it unwisely。 Gamblers at MonteCarlo are pursuing money,and most of them lose it instead,but there are otherways of pursuing money which often succeed。 So it is with happiness。 If youpursue it by means of drink,you are forgetting the hang—over。 Epicurus pursuedit by living only in congenial society and eating only dry bread,supplementedby a little cheese on feast days。 His method proved successful in his case,buthe was a valetudinarian,and most people would need something more vigorous。 Formost people,the pursuit of happiness,unless supplemented in various ways,istoo abstract and theoretical to be adequate as a personal rule of life。 But Ithink that whatever personal rule of life you may choose it should not,exceptin rare and heroic cases,be incompatible with happiness。
There are a great many people who have all the material conditions ofhappiness,i。e。 health and a sufficient income,and who,nevertheless,areprofoundly unhappy。 In such cases it would seem as if the fault must lie with awrong theory as to how to live。 In one sense,we may say that any theory as tohow to live is wrong。 We imagine ourselves more different from the animals thanwe are。 Animals live on impulse,and are happy as long as external conditionsare favorable。 If you have a cat it will enjoy life if it has food and warmthand opportunities for an occasional night on the tiles。 Your needs are morecomplex than those of your cat,but they still have their basis in instinct。 Incivilized societies,especially in English—speaking societies,this is too aptto be forgotten。 People propose to themselves some one paramount objective,andrestrain all impulses that do not minister to it。 A businessman may be soanxious to grow rich that to this end he sacrifices health and privateaffections。 When at last he has become rich,no pleasure remains to him exceptharrying other people by exhortations to imitate his noble example。 Many richladies,although nature has not endowed them with any spontaneous pleasure inliterature or art,decide to be thought cultured,and spend boring hourslearning the right thing to say about fashionable new books that are written togive delight,not to afford opportunities for dusty snobbism。
If you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy,you willsee that they all have certain things in common。 The most important of thesethings is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you areglad to see coming into existence。 Women who take an instinctive pleasure intheir children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family。Artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their ownwork seems good to them。 But there are many humbler forms of the same kind ofpleasure。 Many men who spend their working life in the city devote theirweekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens,and when thespring comes,they experience all the joys of having created beauty。
The whole subject of happiness has,in my opinion,been treated toosolemnly。 It had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of lifeor a religion。 Perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory mayneed a better theory to help them to recovery,just as you may need a tonic whenyou have been ill。 But when things are normal a man should be healthy without atonic and happy without a theory。 It is the simple things that really matter。 Ifa man delights in his wife and children,has success in work,and finds pleasurein the alternation of day and night,spring and autumn,he will be happywhatever his philosophy may be。 If,on the other hand,he finds his wifefateful,his childrens noise unendurable,and the office a nightmare;if in thedaytime he longs for night,and at night sighs for the light of day,then whathe needs is not a new philosophy but a new regimen————a different diet,or moreexercise,or what not。
Man is an animal,and his happiness depends on his physiology more than helikes to think。 This is a humble conclusion,but I cannot make myself disbelieveit。 Unhappy businessmen,I am convinced,would increase their happiness more bywalking six miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy。

People often use animals for food, make-up, medicine and especially for the clothes. Fur coats are definitely a luxury. Yes, they are warm but really they are mostly a symbol of wealth. Do you know how much a mink coat cost?
A report said in an open letter published recently, a Dutch animal-rights group has asked their much-loved Queen to stop wearing fur. The Group pointed out that making clothing from fur represents cruelty to animals. “ Fur belongs to animals, not to human beings.”
Nowadays a lot of greedy people hunt and kill wild animals and birds, so as to make money by selling their hides at high prices. This kind of killing should be stopped and seriously punished. If we don't take actions to protect the wild animals and birds, they will soon disappear from the globe. Man will one day find himself a very lonely creature on earth indeed. Until such a day, when we finally realized that we no longer have these friends or neighbors, what are we human beings going to say? Sorry? No, it is too late to say sorry to them. Ladies and Gentlemen, please consider what I have said to you this afternoon. Think carefully on whether we really need to use animals for our pleasure if you have come to the conclusion that we are wrong.
